about

This recording of music by Heitor Villa-Lobos was first performed and recorded by pianist Katrina Krimsky and released on 1750 Arch Records in 1982. The two suites entitled Próle Do Bébé were composed in 1918 and 1921 in Brazil. The "Dolls" and "The Little Animals" are based upon a series of children's tunes for each of which Villa-Lobos composes an 'atmosphere' that evokes the world of the child and the doll, or the toy animals. The tracks of Suite 1 are: The Porcelain Doll, The Paper Doll, The Clay Doll, The Rubber Doll, The Wooden Doll, The Rag doll, Punch, The Cloth Doll. The tracks of Suite 2 (The Little Animals) are: The Little Paper Cockroach, The Little Cardboard Cat, The Papier Mâché Mouse, The Little Rubber Dog, The Little Wooden Horse, The Little Lead Ox, The Little Cloth Bird, The Little Cotton Bear, The Little Glass Wolf. He extends the sound capabilities of the piano to include those of the guitar, percussive repetitions, tone clusters, and arpeggios. It is the picturesque element that gives his music its primary interest; the sonorities, the play of colors, the popular rhythms are all essential to his personal expression, His melodies are modal, often pentatonic; the harmonies are unstable, dissonant, percussive; the rhythms irregular; the texture a complex fabric of rhythmic motives.
